Since Reesa is basically the cutest baby in the Kelley family right now, most of our blogs are about how awesome and amazing she is. I feel at times I don't reflect on what's new with Patrick or myself. Of course we're not as exciting as Reesa but someone may be interested in knowing how we are.......maybe?
Well as far as Patrick goes.....he's loving his job at George Fox. He had his 6 month review a while back and received gold stars across the board. Of course he would!! The commute is not the most fun but he works every Friday in Portland and when there's a meeting at the Portland campus he stays close by. We're hoping in the next year he will spend more time at the Portland campus since it's a 10 minute drive from our home.
Patrick signed up for the Portland Marathon in October and he still likes to take Reesa for runs on the weekends. He's still an amazing chef and we're hoping to experiment with some new bbq recipes as summer is approaching.
Patrick has been playing the djembe during worship time at our small group and plays when we have a large Sunday gathering once a month. I think he's really looking forward to when our church is large enough to handle a full drum set on Sunday nights. Which brings me to an update that we haven't shared with some of you...
We committed to being core members of a church plant is southwest Portland. It's a church plant with the Alliance church, which is the same denomination as the church down in Salem. The Church planter John Chang's name was mentioned one afternoon while we were attending Mosaic (an alliance church in NE Portland) and the Senior Pastor of Mosaic said that if anyone was interested in learning more about the church plant is SW Portland (Missio) to check out their website for John's contact info. So we did. We met John and his family at a pub and heard about their vision in our community and we were hooked!! We've been going to the small groups since March and are now hosting a missional community (small group) or our own!! We are really thrilled about how God has placed this church in front of us and it's exactly what we've been looking for in our very own neighborhood.
Tonight we are having all of Missio join us in celebrating the birth of a new missional community at our home!! We are so excited to see how God uses us to reach people in our neighborhood and pray that we can be there for those that need God to heal their brokenness.
In other news I have begun to do volunteer work!! Now that Reesa is 6 months and she can handle being a bit more independent, I have signed up to be a volunteer for homework club at a nearby middle school. There are only two weeks left until the school year is over, but they have a summer camp that needs teacher assistants during the week as well. So I'm able to help out once a week for a couple of hours. I forgot how crazy middle schoolers are!! Kathy has been so generous in taking Reesa so that I can still be connected to the education realm.
There is also a food box program at a local organization called Neighborhood House down the road from us. Once a month we get to volunteer and help families in need shop at the Neighborhood House Food Store. It's nice to be involved in the community you are living in. These are the families and children that Reesa will be going to school with some day and I think it's important to be loving and supportive of our neighbors. Even if we don't have a lot of free time, it's nice that we can help out when we do.
Well, I think that's the parental update as of yet. More about Reesa later!!
